Comment on: Effect of metabolic surgery on immunosuppressive medication use in patients with rheumatic diseases

      Rheumatic disease represents a broad spectrum of syndromes with varying ailments and symptoms working through proinflammatory states. In rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory changes in synovial membranes leads to musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, in addition to developing other disorders including cardiovascular and respiratory diseases [

      ]. There is no cure for rheumatic diseases, with a goal to limit symptoms and end-organ damage. First-line therapies for these diseases include medication treatments aimed at diminishing this overactivity. Obesity is also a proinflammatory state, and the worldwide epidemic of obesity has resulted in increasing numbers of patients being at risk. Through adipose-derived inflammation, obesity likely contributes to the development, progression, and ultimately worsening of rheumatologic diseases [
